Bts Watercolor Drawing Blood Sweat and Tear
I am an artist, so I'm majoring in fine arts and I have studied the history of art and the different style throughout the eras.
I just wanted to point out some artwork and explain the history of it in the BS&T MV. So, come, sit down and learn a little bit of art history
The MV seems to focus mainly on the Renaissance era. And I love me some Renaissance art!
Renaissance was a period in European history, from 14th to the 17th century and the name Renaissance is a French word meaning 'rebirth' because of the revival of classical art and intellect of Ancient Greece and Rome. It mainly focused on Christian religious imagery and realism. Renaissance had artists such as the famous four: Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, and Donatello (Not TMNT, guys). There are other artists, but these four are the most well-know, and I am going to talk more about one of them in the next paragraph.
In the photo above, J-Hope is sitting in front of 'Pietà' by Michelangelo, or more of an altered version of it. The far right is the original one and it was made in 1498-1499 and is one of many of the most famous Italian Renaissance pieces.
This is a marble statue of the Virgin Mary holding her dead son, Jesus, after the Crucifixion. The sculpture took less than two years to make as it was commissioned by the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, it was made for the cardinal's funeral monument (wow, this cardinal was well-prepared lol). This sculpture is important work because it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism.
The painting above is called 'The Fall of the Rebel Angels' by Peter Bruegel the Elder (he is going to be mentioned again later). This is the painting Jin looks at at the beginning of the MV. This is an oil painting that was painted in 1562.
What's interesting is that this is not an Italian Renaissance, but Dutch and Flemish Renaissance. Italian Renaissance is what is mostly taught in art history because Florence, Italy is where Renaissance began. Italian Renaissance influences began to show on Early Netherlandish paintings around 1500, but not completely influenced. Dutch and Flemish Renaissance has a surprisingly modern and Gothic style to it, and almost dream-like.
Now, back to the painting after that brief crash course. Bruegel is depicting a passage from the 'Book of Revelation' (also known as The Revelation to John, the Apocalypse of John, The Revelation) in the New Testament of the Bible.
Here a photo I took from the passage that Bruegel depicted. It is Revelation 12:1-9
The archangel Michael and his angels are shown driving the rebel angels from Heaven, and battling demons, half-human and half-animal monsters.
This painting is called 'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus'. This is another Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting. And it is shown here:
This painting has long thought to be painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, it has been examined in 1996 and is now seen as a good early copy by an unknown artist of Bruegel's lost original, perhaps from about 1558. If you look closely, you can see Icarus in the water on the right side of the painting, underneath the ship.
Now, in Greek mythology, Icarus is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. Icarus and Daedalus attempts to escape Crete from being held captive by King Minos by means of wings Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus flew too close to the sun, causing the wax to melt and he fell into the sea to his death. This isn't the only time Icarus makes an appearance in BS&T!
'The Lament for Icarus' by Herbert James Draper. This is an oil painting that was painted in 1898, so this is not Renaissance, but it does tie in well with the other paintings. The painting shows a dead Icarus, surrounded by lamenting (grieving) nymphs. This painting appears here:
And here:
Update!
Since the Japanese ver. Of BS&T was released, I noticed something, and it was this ceiling painting:
Now, i kept looking at it and thought it looked like the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, but it's not! So, this was bugging the hell out of me! I did some research and found the artwork.
This is a Baroque Fresco painting by Giuaglio Quaglio and it's located at Ljubljana Cathedral (or St. Nicholas's church) in Slovenia. It's an illusionistic painting to make the ceiling look higher and arched, which takes skills :ok_hand: 🏽 the fresco shows the transfiguration of St. Nicholas in the center while the persecution of Christians under the Emperor Nero and Diocletian. (Thank you Maknaeguards for the link  🏽)
A side note. Some of the painting from the Korean ver. Makes a reappearance in the Japanese ver.
So, hopefully that opened up some doors for new theories :smirk: you're welcome lol
Update!
Thank you so much for the feature :sob: Art is really important to me, so this post is special to me, so thank you
